In 1955…James Dean died in an automobile accident. His iconic stance in films like Rebel Without a Cause influenced countless rockers.
In 1961…Bob Dylan contributed harmonica to three songs recorded by Carolyn Hester for her self-titled debut. Producer John Hammond was so impressed with Dylan he signed him to a deal.
In 1966…Chas Chandler offered Noel Redding the job of bass player in Jimi Hendrix’s new band, The Experience.
In 1967…Paul McCartney and John Lennon appeared on the David Frost Show.
In 1968…Hunter Davies published The Beatles, the band’s first authorized biography.
In 1969…The album Crosby Stills Nash went gold.
In 1971…Yes began an English tour with Rick Wakeman behind the keyboards for the first time.
In 1977…Sound techie Jay Sloatman brawled with a crew of Lynyrd Skynyrd roadies who believed he deliberately cut the sound during the band’s set at the Louisville Convention Center.
ON SEPTEMBER 30TH…
In 1987…Los Angeles’ Coconut Grove played host to an all-star gathering as Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits and Elvis Costello joined Roy Orbison onstage to record a TV special. The evening’s proceedings were eventually released as A Black and White Night.
In 1988…John Lennon got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In 1989…Aerosmith’s Pump entered the album charts, it eventually peaked at number five.
In 1989…At the Foxboro-Sullivan Stadium in Massachusetts, The Rolling Stones shot the video for “Rock and a Hard Place.”
In 1993…The B-52s’ Kate Pierson staged a sit-in at Vogue magazine’s editorial offices to protest fur clothing.
In 1993…George Harrison and David Crosby made guest appearances on The Simpsons.
In 1997…The Rolling Stones released Bridges to Babylon.
In 1997…Bob Dylan released Time Out of Mind.
In 2003…Sting released his seventh solo album, Sacred Love. Dominated by spiritual and political concerns, the album peaked at number three.
In 2003…Elton John auctioned off the contents of his London home at Sotheby’s. John said he needed to make room for his collection of photographs and modern art.
In 2004…Courtney Love was sued by a Los Angeles travel agency who claimed she owed them nearly 50-thousand dollars for unpaid airline tickets.
