In 1964…Bob Dylan performed a Halloween concert at New York’s Philharmonic Hall. CBS recorded the show for a possible live album. Dylan showed off a new composition called “Advice to Geraldine on Her Miscellaneous Birthday.”
In 1967…Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones was ordered to spend nine months in jail after pleading guilty to marijuana possession. He appealed the judge’s decision and was released on bail.
In 1970…Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas married Dennis Hopper. They divorced exactly one week later.
In 1974…Led Zeppelin officially launched their own Swan Song label with a party at England’s Chislehurst Caves. Other attendees included Bill Wyman, Groucho Marx and The Pretty Things, who were signed to Swan Song.
In 1975…The Marshall Tucker Band performed at a campaign fundraiser for presidential candidate Jimmy Carter.
In 1988…Debbie Gibson held a séance on Halloween to raise the spirits of both Liberace and Sid Vicious.
In 1993…Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea watched his friend River Phoenix die after he collapsed outside Hollywood’s Viper Room.
In 1998…Kiss kicked off their Psycho Circus Tour at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium.
In 2000…Napster announced it would go into a partnership with BMG Entertainment to develop an online MP3-swapping subscription service.
In 2000…Limp Bizkit’s Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water was the number-one record in the country.
In 2002…Run-DMC’s Jam Master Jay was shot and killed in his Queens studio by an unknown assailant. He was 37.
In 2003…Jane’s Addiction played a surprise “flash mob” gig outside London’s Brixton Academy immediately after their Halloween show there. Fans were invited to the karaoke-styled set via text message.
In 2003…The Flaming Lips were forced to cut short a concert in Birmingham, England after one of their dancing pandas collapsed onstage.
In 2003…The London Times named Sir Paul McCartney the richest man in pop, with annual earnings of over 40-million pounds. Madonna topped the list of females.
