ROLLING STONES PLAY SONG WITH WYMAN: HOW IT HAPPENED

Posted: May 31, 2011

British pianist Ben Waters recently released Boogie for Stu, a tribute album to late Rolling Stones founding member and keyboardist Ian Stewart.  On the record, the band reunites with former bassist Bill Wyman on a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Watching the River Flow.” It all happened somewhat magically because each of the band’s members independently chose to contribute to the song without knowing the others were on it.  Ben filled us in on what happened from there.

“They all just chose it separately and just ended up playing on it and then Bill Wyman came in and said, ‘I’d love to play on a track with [drummer] Charlie [Watts].’  So I said, ‘Will which one do you want to do?’  He said ‘Watching the River Flow’ as well.  So it was more by luck than judgment.  It wasn’t planned, in my naïve way I didn’t ever expect to get them all on one track. I never even thought about it.  It started from small beginnings and just sort of took on a life of its own.”

Boogie for Stu is out now and proceeds from it benefit the British Heart Foundation.
