In 1922…Eck Robertson and Henry Gilliland laid down six fiddle tunes recorded at New York’s Victor studio in what was later called the first country music recording session.
In 1967…Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who were jailed days earlier on drugs offenses, were released by Britain’s High Court after posting bail. They later appealed their sentences.
In 1972…The Rolling Stones opened their seventh North American tour in Vancouver.
In 1971…San Francisco’s Fillmore West closed.
In 1975…David Bowie began filming The Man Who Fell to Earth.
In 1977…Gene Simmons gave his approval to Marvel Comics for the first Kiss comic book to be published.
In 1983…The Everly Brothers announced they made up and would play London’s Royal Albert Hall as a duo for the first time since 1973.
In 1985…At a New York auction, John Lennon’s psychedelic Rolls Royce sold for two-million dollars.
In 1986…Steve Winwood released Back in the High Life.
In 1989…The surviving Beatles took out an injunction
against Dave Clark, formerly of The Dave Clark Five, and banned him from selling copies of the old Ready Steady Go! TV show which featured “The Fab Four.” The case was later settled out of court.
In 1990…Pink Floyd headlined at the Knebworth Festival in England.
In 1994…Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam testified before Congress looking into whether Ticketmaster had a monopoly on selling tickets.
In 1994…Virgin Records rushed The Rolling Stones’ Voodoo Lounge into stores early after the album was played over the radio.
In 1996…Neil Young gave online users a preview of his forthcoming album Broken Arrow.
In 1998…The Warped Tour, with Bad Religion and The Specials, opened in Phoenix.
In 1999…Eric Clapton performed a benefit concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden for his Crossroads rehab center in Antigua. His guests included Sheryl Crow, Mary J. Blige and Bob Dylan.
In 2000…At Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, nine people were crushed to death during a crowd surge during Pearl Jam’s set.
In 2004…David Bowie cancelled the remainder of his Reality tour after he suffered what was reported as a pinched nerve in his shoulder. Later, it would be discovered that Bowie needed emergency heart surgery.
In 2004…‘80s Latina superstar Gloria Estefan announced she would permanently retire from the road at the end of her Live and Re-Wrapped Tour.
