ON AUGUST 29TH…
In 1966…The Beatles performed their last live concert for a paying audience.
In 1970…The Kinks’ sensitive ode to a transvestite, “Lola,” was released.
In 1976…Spirit performed a special reunion concert in Santa Monica, California. Neil Young was so overcome, he got onstage to play “Like a Rolling Stone” with them, but guitarist Randy California pushed him away. After the band’s bass player explained Young was there by his invitation, the concert proceeded as normal.
In 1977…Three people were arrested after trying to exhume Elvis Presley’s body from its resting place at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis. Elvis’ body was later moved to Graceland.
In 1990…In Chicago, Elton John entered rehab to fight bulimia, booze and drugs.
In 1991…In Denver, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers kicked off a national tour.
In 1996…Isaac Hayes wrote Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole and asked him to refrain from using the song “Soul Man” as his campaign theme tune. The lyrics had been changed to “I’m a Dole Man.”
In 2002…Guns N’ Roses performed “Welcome to the Jungle” at the MTV Video Music Awards. Axl Rose, appearing with dreadlocks, was the only original member of the band onstage.
In 2003…Ex-New Edition star Bobby Brown was sprung from jail after serving seven days for parole violations. He spent the following 60 days under house arrest.
In 2003…Appearing on a New York radio station, Mets catcher Mike Piazza played “IRS,” a new Guns N’ Roses tune from their long-awaited album Chinese Democracy. The band’s management immediately demanded the track be retrieved.
In 2003…Radiohead’s Thom Yorke joined R.E.M. onstage in Vancouver and performed “E-Bow the Letter” and “It’s the End of the World as We Know It.” The following night, Michael Stipe sang “Karma Police” with Radiohead at the same venue.
In 2004…50 Cent and his G-Unit posse were booed offstage at England’s Reading Festival. One irate concertgoer even threw a folding chair at the stage.
In 2005…Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme collapsed during a concert in Hamburg, Germany. A doctor said the rocker was suffering from “exhaustion.”
