In 1999…George Harrison and his wife were attacked in their home during a robbery. Though Harrison was stabbed in the chest four times, he and his wife were able to subdue the assailant until police arrived.
In 2002…In Tucson, Arizona, Diana Ross was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
In 2004…Bandleader and clarinetist Artie Shaw died at the age of 94 in Thousand Oaks, California.

In 1929…Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians played “Auld Lang Syne” as a New Year’s Eve song for the first time.
In 1940…As a result of a dispute between the radio networks and ASCAP (The American Society of Composers and Publishers), the radio industry was prevented from playing any ASCAP-licensed music. The ban lasted for ten months.
In 1955…Elvis Presley’s “I Forgot to Remember to Forget” was number one in the country singles chart.
In 1961…The Pendletons performed their first gig under their new name, The Beach Boys. The vocal group appeared at the Ritchie Valens Memorial Concert in Long Beach, California.
In 1961…Janis Joplin had her first singing engagement at Beaumont, Texas’ Halfway House.
In 1966…George Harrison‘s New Year’s plans were foiled when London nightclub Annabel’s barred him from admission because he was not wearing a tie.

In 2003…According to reports, “Torn” singer Natalie Imbruglia married Silverchair‘s Daniel Johns in a secret ceremony at a resort on Australia’s northeastern coast.
In 2003…Eric Clapton and The Kinks‘ Ray Davies were both made Commanders of the British Empire in the Queen’s New Year’s Honors List.
In 2004…The Who‘s Roger Daltrey was made a Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to music and charity work.
In 2005…Rapper Obie Trice was shot while driving along Detroit’s Lodge Freeway. He was treated at hospital and later released.

In 1953…Country singer/songwriter Hank Williams died in the back seat of a Cadillac. He was being driven to a concert in West Virginia. He was 29.
In 1962…The Beatles performed their first audition for Decca Records in London. However, the company’s A&R man was unimpressed by their 15-song set of standards and originals and signed The Tremeloes instead.
In 1963…The Beatles kicked off a five-date Scottish tour to promote their single “Love Me Do.”
In 1967…The Grateful Dead and Big Brother & the Holding Company performed at the New Year’s Wail/Whale in San Francisco. The bash was held by the Hell’s Angels to thank the Haight-Ashbury hippies for bailing their member Chocolate George.
In 1976…Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant walked unassisted for the first time since his car accident in Greece in August 1975.
In 1977…Former gay disco The Roxy opened again as a punk club in London, with The Clash headlining the first night there.
In 1982…ABBA made their final live appearance at a Stockholm concert.
In 2000…George Harrison left the hospital following a knife attack at his English mansion by a crazed fan. Doctors told him that he would be able to play the guitar again, despite suffering a hand wound.
In 2002…Bush leader Gavin Rossdale proposed to his longtime girlfriend Gwen Stefani of No Doubt. She agreed.
In 2006…Singer-guitarist Bryan Harvey of ‘80s duo House of Freaks was found dead with his family in his Richmond, Virginia, home. Bandmate Johnny Hott summoned police after arriving for a New Year’s party and discovering their house was on fire.
