ON MARCH 2ND…
In 1964...The Beatles’ “Twist and Shout” was released in the U-S on Tollie Records, the fourth label to release a Beatle record in America. Also on this day, the Beatles started working on their first feature-length movie, A Hard Days Night.
In 1968…Blue Cheer gave birth to heavy metal when their interpretation of “Summertime Blues” was released.
In 1969…John Lennon and Yoko Ono performed at a jazz festival in Cambridge, England. It was the first time a Beatle had performed solo.
In 1974…Stevie Wonder took home five GRAMMY Awards during ceremonies held at the Hollywood Palladium. The singer was honored for Album of the Year (Innervisions), Best Pop Vocal Performance ("You Are the Sunshine of My Life"), Best R&B Song ("Superstition"), Best R&B Vocal Performance ("Superstition") and Best Engineered Recording (Innervisions). Said Wonder on his five trips up to the podium: “I would like to thank you all for making this the sunshine of my life tonight.”

In 1966…A day after Liverpool’s Cavern Club closed due to bankruptcy, a hundred Beatles fans barricaded themselves inside. Still, the vacant venue, where the Beatles had a two-year residency, was later turned into a subway station.
In 1969…Jim Morrison was arrested in Miami and charged with “lewd and lascivious behavior in public by exposing his private parts and by simulating masturbation and oral copulation.” He was also charged with open profanity and public drunkenness. The charges stemmed from a wild concert The Doors performed that night at the Dinner Key Auditorium. Morrison was later found guilty of indecent exposure and profanity.
In 1970…On The Ed Sullivan Show, two clips were aired of The Beatles performing “Let It Be” and “Two of Us.” It was the last time the band appeared on the show that broke them in America.
